Tucson Spotlight is a nonprofit newsroom launching September 30 that aims to shine a light on undercovered topics and communities, provide robust, community-based coverage and amplify the voices of new, emerging and diverse journalists. Spotlight's coverage will focus on solutions, local governments, education, sustainability, social services, and politics, and issues through the lens of the Hispanic community. Tucson Spotlight's founders, Caitlin Schmidt and Susan Barnett, are long-time Tucsonans who believe in the value of locally owned and reported news. We're committed to providing paid opportunities for new graduates and journalism students and to gain experience and showcase their work, but we need to the community's support to do that. We have a small amount of startup funding and are already pursuing grants and donations, but we have a full staff and limited funds. Your tax-deductible donation will help pay for a reporter's salary and provide funds so that we can compensate our interns for their work. Your money will be directly supporting our efforts to build a sustainable, community-based newsroom that provides information in multiple formats and languages and gives community members the tools that they need to take action in their lives.
